Back in 1992 when Reebok was to make its presence known on the basketball court, the company enlisted the most dominant player at the time, Shaquille O’Neal, to its roster of athletes. Almost overnight, the 7-foot tall powerhouse charged his way into that season’s NBA Rookie of the Year title, several NBA All-Star Games, numerous records, and a career spanning 19 years, all the while playing in two of the most iconic Reebok basketball shoes – the Shaq Attaq and the Shaqnosis. Now, some 21 years later, Reebok Classic will be bring both designs back. In a well publicized press event yesterday at PROJECT Las Vegas trade show, Reebok’s Vice President of Classic, Basketball and Entertainment, Todd Krinsky, highlighted the company’s recent successes in retro offerings like the Iverson collection, Pump, Kamikaze, and others. Krinsky also credited Swizz Beatz, the Creative Director of Reebok Classic, who helped to put things into motion.
Set out to be a polarizing design, Reebok took a chance in 1995 when it released the Reebok Shaqnosis (now known as Reebok Classic Shaqnosis), the second of Shaq’s P.E. Because of Shaq’s hard-to-miss physique on the court, the design team at Reebok sought for a silhouette that will attract as much attention as possible from the fans, if not more. Finally, the team settled on a creation that to this day invokes a “love it or hate it” attitude among sneakerheads. In fact, the shoe was so divisive among fans that Reebok actually created a separate line called Mobius.
Similar to the Reebok Classic Shaq Attaq, the Reebok Classic Shaqnosis, in all of its original form, will be available on Friday, July 19th at select retailers such as Finish line, Foot Locker, Jimmy Jazz, Shiekh, City Gear, Shoe Palace as well as Reebok’s online store.
Release Date: July 19th, 2013 (Friday)
