Member of the so-called Young British Artists generation and best known for his "Self" sculptures made of frozen blood (his own), Marc Quinn's methodical approach to art is neither for the squeamish nor those with faint of heart. Thus, making this collaboration with BAMFORD WATCH DEPARTMENT all the more unique. A culmination from a chance encounter last December with timepiece designer George Bamford during his stay on Mustique, a private resort island out in the Caribbean. Both Quinn and Bamford decided to create a series of wearable art fashioned from vintage Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller watches. The result was the Rolex Deepsea Collection.
Started off with sets of Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller, circa 1950s and 1960s, Bamford applied each with his signature PVD coating of Military Grade Titanium in matte black. Quinn then furthered the design with a custom dial face, a mixed theme of the human eye and the globe based on his The Eye of History series. A subtle reference to air travel, the designs are billed as Low-Altitude, Mid-Altitude, and High-Altitude, with miniature airplanes in place of both minute and hour hands. Numbered and signed, each comes with its own "black box" in the likeness of a flight data recorder. To be available exclusively at London's Dover Street Market starting this Thursday, June 13th.
