For the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, the iconic Buzz Aldrin based Moonman statue is taking a backseat to a KAWS Companion version. With the awards being broadcast live from Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 25th, MTV executives felt it appropriate to redesign the iconic statue. By choosing Brooklyn based and world renowned artist KAWS for the project, MTV did their homework in choosing the ideal artist for the project.
The statue is still made of chrome and stands 13" in height and features the Companion decked out in a spacesuit while holding an MTV flag. In addition to the statue redesign, KAWS will also be responsible for designing the stage set which is said to feature a 60-foot inflatable KAWS Moonman.
The partnership continues MTV's tradition of working with great artists and KAWS' work is arguably the most recognizable in the world right now to the 16-34 age demographic. For those not familiar with KAWS, the MTV movie awards will only help grow the artist's name and help keep MTV at the top of the pop culture food chain.
