Samsung is poised to become a more conspicuous presence in Northern California's Silicon Valley, breaking ground this week on its new U.S. headquarters in San Jose. The $300 million campus, designed by architectural firm NBBJ, is scheduled for completion in 2015, highlighted by a 10-story tower that will house 2,000 employees. The design's exterior is constructed with white metal, glass and terracotta, with a parking structure and courtyards contained within. A unique feature: employees will never be more than one floor removed from a green space. Energy efficiency is achieved through a rooftop solar array, a tower façade designed to reduce solar heat gain, and clear glass to allow natural light deep into the floorplate. Located at the intersection of North First and East Tasman Drive in San Jose, the headquarters will place Samsung in close proximity to Apple in nearby Cupertino, which should escalate the rivalry between the tech giants in terms of talent, investments and innovations.
