Both known for their presences on and off the courts, basketball star Kevin Durant joined Chinese tennis pro Li Na on stage yesterday evening for the inaugural of Nike Summer Nights in Shanghai, China. Dubbed by the local media outlets as "The Du-Na Duo," the dynamic partners went onto host pick-up games in each others' respective sports, coaching and rallying all of the participants around them.
An ambitious initiative which started in 2011 with Nike Festival of Sports, the goal of Nike Summer Nights is to inspire and encourage regional youths to take up sports of any form this season. Under a new JUST DO IT banner, Nike will send out a "wake up call" at 7 pm regional time each evening as a reminder for local youngsters to participate. Then from 8 pm to 10 pm and under coverage of cooler night temperature, they can join with thousands of others across the Greater China region, as well as some 50 celebrity athletes from Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei and Hong Kong, to a host of Nike Summer Nights activities that include basketball, football, action sports, tennis, Nike Training Club (NTC), even relay races and dodge ball.
Mindful of Nike Co-Founder Bill Bowerman's motto of "If you have a body, you are an athlete," Simon Pestridge, the company's VP of Marketing added, "We will do more this summer to inspire China youth to do sports everyday, so it becomes part of their daily routine when school resumes in September."
