Self-aggrandizement has long been a lyrical staple in hip-hop, but Kendrick Lamar took boasting to a new level this week with the release of "Control," the Big Sean track in which Kendrick declares himself the "King of New York" while calling out other MCs by name. Big Sean recently sat down with Vibe to discuss the song, left off his upcoming album Hall of Fame due to sampling clearance issues. According to Sean, he completed his first verse then sent the track to Kendrick and Jay Electronica for their guest verses. He tells Vibe he had to laugh when he heard Kendrick's lines, saying it's what hip-hop "needs to get back to … I haven't seen so many people excited over a hip-hop song."
