While you may need a degree in chemistry to translate the name of this collaborative project between Urwerk and MB&F, all you need is a set of eyes to see that what these two can make together is a creative force like no other. C3H5N3O9 was created last year by the two watchmakers and their Experiment ZR012 "Nitro" watch uses a movement and display based on a Wankel engine, which was named after the German engineer who completed intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust with one rotational process. While the math behind the process is complicated, the display is extraordinary, and its name is fitting: the molecular formula for nitroglycerin. Understandably, this is the first time that the epicyloid indications from Wankel's original design have been used in a watch with the hour and minute indications built into the black zirconium case, which are secured with articulated and compound lugs. Not intended to be a luxury brand in its own right, the C3H5N3O9 is an experimental platform for the two companies, but that doesn't mean that if you have an extra CHF110,000 (approx US$115,600) laying around you can't buy one of the 12 of them being made.
