According to Patrick Liberty, co-owner of SoCal streetwear brand Akomplice, the business is a means to carrying out humanitarian efforts. It’s more a “social movement” than a clothing brand, he says. To that end, the company’s latest project draws on the talents of emerging Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$, who joins with the J Dilla Foundation and Akomplice to create a capsule collection that holds philanthropy at its core — 100% of the collection profits will go to buying instruments and music lessons for underprivileged kids in American inner cities. Included in the collection is a t-shirt and crew neck, both printed with an evocative cloud-graphic of J Dilla’s likeness, and an exclusive 45 record containing an unreleased Dilla beat dubbed “Two Lips” on side A. Side B features an unreleased Joey Bada$$ track over the aforementioned beat on Side B. The limited capsule collection launches through select global Akomplice retailers and online starting November 21st.
