Led by the influential architect Ettore Sottsass, the Memphis Group was a collaborative design group that helped to dedicate “the look of the 80s” many of us are familiar with today. Made up of 15 furniture and product designers from the Milan area, the group took its name after “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again”, a Bob Dylan song that in a continuous loop on the stereo during the group’s first meeting. Sensing a stagnation in creativity, the collective decided to put together their own artworks and furnishing utilizing unconventional materials, wild colors and odd patterns. As diversified as their interests, members found influences from Pop Art, Art Deco, 50s’ Kitsch Movement, even futurism. Provocative and extravagant, the garnered much interests throughout 80s and helped to start the post-modern era .
Similar to last year’s Tom Dixon collaboration, adidas is wrapping up this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan (aka Milan Furniture Fair) with the adidas Originals Memphis Collection. Inspired by the works of the Memphis Group, the collection features many of the same patterns and colors on four adidas ZX classics. In sequence from adidas Originals ZX 5000, ZX 7000, to ZX 8000 and finally ZX 9000, the ostentatious design slowly builds as well.
Along with two matching graphic tees, the the adidas Originals Memphis Collection will be available later this week via select adidas Originals retailers. The collection will also be available as part of size?’s adidas Originals Select Collection and will be its exclusive retailer for the UK region.
