Now with its finance in working order, Peugeot is planning to roar back into the automotive racing world with the Peugeot 2008 DKR. Set to participate in the 2015 Dakar Rally, the entry will be the French automaker’s first after a 25-year long hiatus.

With a cool tonal livery in dark silver and black, the Peugeot 2008 DKR is quite similar to the Peugeot 2008 mini-crossover, except amped ten-fold to meet the unforgiving course of Dakar. Riding of 37-inch tires provided by Michelin, Peugeot engineers took out the rear doors and put 2008 DKR’s suspension on steroid. Next, they outfitted the interior with a state-of-the-arts cockpit that will update the two-men team on engine telemetry, suspension, transmission and other crucial data points in real time.

Learning from experiences, Peugeot decided to set 2008 DKR apart from its peers and not give it a four-wheel drive transmission. Instead, engineers are confident the vehicle’s robust two-wheel drive transmission will outperform the competition.

Backed by old partners like Total oil company and new ones such as Red Bull Racing, the Peugeot 2008 DKR will enter next year’s Dakar Rally starting in January 2015 with drivers Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres at the helm.
