Back in 2010, The New York Times identified the city of Seoul as an emerging global fashion player, something that’s partially attributed to designer Bumsuk Choi, whose General Idea label is increasingly gaining notice among critics and fans alike. Earlier today, General Idea showcased its Spring/Summer 2015 menswear collection for New York Fashion Week, conducting an intimate presentation at an offsite venue at 355 Bowery. The collection — dominated by a black and white color palette featuring a playful sense of proportion — is clearly influenced by streetwear, as well as the minimalism of Helmut Lang. Cotton knitwear is combined with neoprene, nylon and leather, balancing a utilitarian aesthetic with a modern take on sportswear. The Bowery venue is set to be converted to a pop-up shop, which will stock General Idea’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection. It opens tomorrow and runs until September 30.
