Set to debut at the Paris Motor Show in a few weeks is the Renault EOLAB Concept, a 235 mpg hybrid car that weighs in at a feather-light 2,105 pounds, thanks in part to lightweight materials like magnesium and aluminum. Renault's zero-emission hybrid gas-electric powertrain features a three-cylinder 999 cc gas engine -- good for 75 horsepower and 70 lb-ft of torque -- mated to a clutch-less three-speed transmission, plus a permanent magnet electric motor in the clutch housing, capable of 53 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of twist. An on-board 6.7kWh battery delivers an all-electric range of 37 miles, with a top speed of 74 mph in all-electric mode, while accelerating up to third gear kicks in the internal combustion engine.
