Like the CITGO billboard nearby, The Rathskeller (affectionately known as The Rat by fans) was a familiar establishment along Boston’s Kenmore Square. Famous for its alternative music venues, the gritty tavern helped to promote then unknowns acts from the New England region. By the 1980s, it became a compulsory stop for the likes of The Police, R.E.M., The Ramones, Sonic Youth, and more… Sadly, gentrification around the Kenmore Square along with a costly flood damage forced The Rat to close its doors in 1997.
Though it is gone, it isn’t forgotten as Boston boutique CONCEPTS and footwear maker VANS launch a special Old Skool edition. Billed as the “Rat Hunter,” the VANS Syndicate design features a suede and washed denim upper to replicate the bleached denim outfits frequently worn by musicians and fans alike. A cracked leather details to mirror the duct tape found around the make-shift stage, a checkered midsole in bright accentuates the overall appearance. No one pair will be alike thanks to the washed denim paneling, the CONCEPTS x VANS Syndicate Old Skool “Rat Hunter” along with matching apparel will be available only at CONCEPTS starting tomorrow. In-store sale to start at 10 am EDT, follow by online release at 11 am EDT.
