After dealing with days on the queue and the uncertainty of winning the chance to purchase, a few hundreds die-hard Jordan fans across Asia finally got their hands on a pair of the Slam Dunk x Air Jordan 6 earlier today. As showcased during a special presentation in Hong Kong earlier last week, Takehiko Inoue, the creator of Slam Dunk manga/anime series, explained that not only was 2014 the 23rd anniversary of the Air Jordan 6 model, it was also the first AJs that Michael Jordan wore when he won his first NBA Championship. But since that presentation, the Slam Dunk x Air Jordan 6 also garnered another designation from fans as the “Hanamichi Sakuragi,” aptly named after the high school delinquent and the protagonist of Slam Dunk.
Covered entirely in Varsity Red-colored nubuck leather on translucent soles, the Slam Dunk x Air Jordan 6 “Hanamichi Sakuragi” appears to be no different than other all-red AJ6s, with the exception of the embroidered “10”, Sakuragi’s jersey number, near the heel. But when light strikes it at a certain angle, an entire pane of the Slam Dunk manga appears. Illustrated by Inoue specifically for this project, Jordan Brand then layered on the drawing in the recognizable style of Ben-Day dots found on comic books. And because the emboss process utilized reflective ink, Inoue’s artwork shines under a certain light. Complemented with a reflective tongue, the Slam Dunk x Air Jordan 6 “Hanamichi Sakuragi” will be available globally starting on Saturday, November 1st.
