With his Spring/Summer 2015 collection, unveiled earlier today at London Fashion Week, Beijing-based designer Xander Zhou applied a neo-expressionist take on the Wild West, featuring broad, rudimentary elements of celluloid cowboys’ garb executed with contemporary materials and techniques. Zhou’s long fringed leather coats, constructed with what looked like snakeskin, was actually shiny leather woven to create a reptilian pattern, while shearling-lined leather jackets were appliquéd with sheepskin patches in bright blue and pink, giving the impression of a technicolor cow. Elsewhere, overcoats featured a basket weave reminiscent of Chinatown bags, left unhemmed to resemble Western fringe. The result was a welcome clash of cultures, filtered through a distinctly ’70s lens and proving that the West is better left wild.
