With the introduction of his Off-White brand’s Fall 2015 range, Virgil Abloh takes a step away from his streetwear roots to present a collection steeped in a vintage mountaineering aesthetic. Layering was a dominant theme here, featuring wool plaid ponchos, a parkas worn over a varsity jacket, and a mesh hoodie slipped over a jersey turtleneck sweater. Makeshift rough rope belts, thick wool socks and wide-brimmed hats topped off several looks, while bulky mountain boots appeared ready to hit the trail. The title of the collection, “Don’t Look Down,” may have been an allusion to mountain climbing, but it was also a tidy summation of Abloh’s design philosophy here of simply creating clothes that he loved.
