In creating the Nike Kyrie 1 basketball shoe, Nike designer Leo Chang and his team team were intent on crafting a silhouette that would respond to Kyrie Irving’s dynamic speed and quickness. The latest colorway of the shoe — finished in complementary green and mango hues — takes inspiration from the Venus flytrap, the carnivorous plant that lies in wait until it strikes with deceptive speed, much like the point guard’s explosive first step. Performance benefits include lightweight Hyperfuse construction, Nike Zoom Air cushioning, and a 360-degree dynamic traction pattern for outstanding grip. Personal design notes, meanwhile, take the form of handwritten details on the upper heel and tongue interior, a jagged pattern at the toe inspired by the Sydney Opera House in Irving’s homeland of Australia, and “JBY” — denoting Irving’s Just Be You tagline — sitting beneath the Kyrie Irving logo on the outsole. The Nike Kyrie 1 Flytrap launches in stores February 26th.
