There was a period in time when the Volkswagen T1 bus was powered by flower power. For Swiss coachbuilder Fred Bernhard, the classic VW bus is better served by Porsche power. He took six years to outfit his vintage 1962 VW T1 “Bulli” van with an air-cooled engine from a Porsche 993 Turbo, one equipped with two turbochargers that ultimately generates 530 horsepower and 558 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed manual gearbox, steering system and brakes are also borrowed from the 993. The use of carbon fiber reduces the weight to 3,300 pounds, and the combination of increased power and weight loss allows the vehicle to top out at 143 miles per hour.
