The City of Light may be known for haute couture and haute dining, but the French capital has loosened up remarkably in the past decade or so. After all, it would have been difficult to conceive of the emergence of food trucks in Paris, the birthplace of the Michelin Guide, but that’s the city in 2015. For cool hunters, Paris is now home to a number of stores that offer the apparel and sneaker brands we covet. The following is a selection of 10 Paris shops that you need to check out when you’re in Paris.

Long recognized as a bastion of cool, colette has been at the forefront of trends, movements and upheavals in style since its inception in 1997. Visitors to the concept store can avail themselves to established brands and cutting-edge streetwear, as well as kitschy lifestyle ephemera.

Housed in an ornate space that formerly contained a 19th-century fabric factory, Merci is a concept store that operates like an art gallery, with elaborate designer exhibitions that get changed out on a regular basis. An interesting sidenote: Merci donates its profits to charity.

Having launched on the famous Rue Honore at the turn of the millennium, Starcow offered apparel and sneakers from the worlds of skateboarding even before “streetwear” was a recognized term. Since then, the store has become the de-facto center the Parisian streetwear community.

Centre Commercial


The concept store was started by the two founders of Veja, a sneaker brand dedicated to sustainability and fair trade. The store’s name reflects its expansive mission, where homegrown brands like Bleu de Paname are offered alongside restored bicycles, vintage furniture and various art pieces.

Launched in 1980 in a basement store on the Champs-Élysées, L’Eclaireur was one of the first retailers to bring Maison Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten and Helmut Lang to France. The company has since spawned additional locations throughout Paris, while adding designers including Junya Watanabe,  Balenciaga and Rick Owens to its roster

Surface to Air


Opening in 2010 in the fashionable Marais district, Surface to Air’s newest Parisian flagship is a beautiful space built with sparkling concrete, Marquina marble, moving panels and trompe l’oeil flooring. In addition to the brand’s latest men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections, the store houses an art gallery and revolving pop-up space.

The small boutique is named after what was formerly the city’s red-light district, which in recent years has become known more for its boutique hotels and brunch spots than nefarious nocturnal activities. Its growing influence lies in stark contrast to the store’s square footage, with the in-house line and Nike collaborations having become hot commodities on a global scale.

Named after a metro station in founder Julien Bouzereau’s hometown of Montreal, Beaubien was launched in 2013 as a small, carefully curated menswear boutique offering an international roster of brands hailing from the U.S., Japan and Europe. Customers can expect goods from the likes of Battenwear, Norse Projects, Ebbets Field Flannels and Maison Kitsuné.

Black Rainbow


The Black Rainbow crew opened this space in the Marais District back in 2010. Featuring a one-of-a-kind setup, the store offers a range of streetwear standbys, as well as a full complement of sneaker brands, ranging from ASICS to Vans. Special launches are sometimes accompanied by a brunch event, satisfying customers’ hunger in both the literal and figurative sense.
