In the Postwar idyll of the 1950s, uniformity ruled: American families lived in uniform suburban row houses, and the bread winners of those nuclear families worked in smoky offices attired in grey flannel suits, which were themselves everyday uniforms of a sort.  In 2002, Thom Browne burst onto the scene with a shrunken version of that grey 1950s suit, and he took to New York Fashion Week: Men’s to honor his original inspiration with a show entitled “The Officeman.” A retro conformity was the guiding principle throughout the presentation, with models wearing the same parted hair and the same stylized version of the salaryman’s grey suit. The only contrasts were marked by different shades of grey and subtle pattern variations, ranging from pinstripes to Prince of Wales checks.
