Stephen “ESPO” Powers Puts Up Hand-Painted Signs Throughout NYC

During the month of August, New Yorkers will be treated to a temporary public art project, “ICY SIGNS,” featuring hand-painted signs by Stephen “ESPO” Powers, installed on streetlight poles along the seven or so miles that make up the city’s Summer Streets route. The Manhattan-based artist uses his signs to overstate their importance as “an emotional wayfinding system,” inspired by traditional directional signs that guides pedestrians and commuters at every turn. Powers’ signs speak to Summer Streets participants about life and love, but just for a brief moment, providing guideposts not for city streets but their interior pathways instead. A total of thirty signs will be exhibited at four of the Summer Streets rest stops:
