Although work on the Air Jordan XXX began with one question from Michael Jordan to Tinker Hatfield last February, the story of its design is not one moment or point in time. Instead, it is a unique synthesis of his evolution as a player and a brand design collaborator.

“The next morning I drew a shoe,” Hatfield recalls, “because I knew I was in deep trouble. We had no time.”

Each of the elements within the Air Jordan XXX is the result of a key performance or creative insight fundamental to the player, beginning with a series of sketches from Hatfield, inspired the iconic shot of Jordan flying in the slam dunk contest. Realizing he was behind the 8-ball, work developed quickly with the “XXX” transformed into a basketball net, stars symbolizing his litany of achievements, and prints and styles from around the Jordan brand appearing on the surfaces. From there, Mark Smith broadened its design to also reference the timeless lineage with an eye toward the future.

The end result, as we all know, is a look that honors the past, but embraces the future of the Jordan line. While the Air Jordan XXX will be available globally on February 12, 2016, you can explore in-depth Hatfield’s design process for the latest flagship in the gallery below.
