In 2015, Tiffany Beers, Nike Senior Innovator, Beers was tasked with creating a self-lacing Nike Mag to celebrate Back to the Future Day. Her followup project was to apply the technology to a performance shoe. She and Nike design legend Tinker Hatfield went on to develop the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, featuring adaptive lacing. "When you step in," says Beers, "your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten." "Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it's perfect." The lace tightening technology is dubbed EARL, which stands for Electro Adaptive Reactive Lacing. The innovation effectively allows for precise, consistent, personalized lockdown, manually adjusted on the fly. The Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 will be available only to members of Nike+ beginning Holiday 2016, with three introductory colorways offered.
