The development of the new Nike Magista 2 football boot is predicated on one question: What might happen if the foot had evolved as if it were designed to play football? Scientific testing and rapid prototyping were the keys to answering question, with Nike football designer Phil Woodman reimagining the original Magista silhouette -- featuring the revolutionary mid-height collar and Nike Flyknit technology -- to enhance the boot’s tactility, what Woodman calls "sensory amplification through feel." He worked with the Nike Sports Research Lab to define which parts of the foot are most sensitive to touch and mapped those against high-touch zones, visually applied to a foot model in the form of a heat map.

Woodman subsequently began 3D printing test uppers featuring peaks and troughs of varying dimensions, whereas the surface area of the original Magista was uniform throughout. According to Woodman, "The texture is podular and cushioned, designed to communicate with a player’s sense of touch when the ball comes in contact with it." Additional benefits include a more anatomically contoured Dynamic Fit Collar; an internal heel counter for enhanced lockdown; a Nike Grip sockliner for in-boot stability; and a new soleplate revamped through Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

The Nike Magista 2 will be available July 24 via the Nike Football App.
