In 1989, Back to the Future II revealed the Nike Mag, offering a glimpse into the future of footwear. That piece of fiction was given material form when Nike launched the Nike Mag in 2011 through a charity auction, raising both awareness and funds to help in the fight against Parkinson's disease. In 2015, Nike turned fiction into fact, delivering the first adaptive auto-lacing Nike Mag shoes to Michael J. Fox. In 2016, Nike brings the future to a select few, offering 89 pairs of the "power lacing" Nike Mag through a charity raffle and auction.
In conjunction with the launch, Nike has produced a new short film revealing how the Nike Mag has come alive through the technology. The clip features insights from design legend Tinker Hatfield and Nike Senior Innovator Tiffany Beers, who led the team that developed the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0. That shoe, and its groundbreaking adaptive lacing system, would go on to pave the way for the current iteration of the Nike Mag.
