Reebok Is "Growing" Plant-Based Sneakers

As part of the brand's Cotton + Corn initiative

As part of its efforts to create truly environmentally friendly products, Reebok has developed its new Cotton + Corn initiative, featuring the first ever plant-based athletic shoe. The unique build will use an upper made from organic cotton and a sole originating from corn, with the ultimate goal of creating a range of plant-based shoes that can be composted at the end of their life span, combined with soil to grow the materials for the next lineup of shoes.

For t he Cotton + Corn initiative, Reebok partnered with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products, makers of Susterra propanediol, which is a petroleum-free, non-toxic, 100% USDA certified bio-based product derived from field corn. Susterra propanediol is the main element used in the soles of Cotton + Corn shoes, which will hit the market later in 2017.
