Nike and animation studio LAIKA have unveiled the Missing Link x Nike Air Max Susan ahead of the movie's April 12 release date.
Missing Link will star a lovable Pacific Northwest creature named Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis) as the protagonist on an adventure to find his ancestry. Along the way he will be accompanied by Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), the world's greatest monster chaser.
Designed by Nike VP of Advanced Concepts, Tinker Hatfield and former animator Michael Berger, the Nike Air Max 1 is covered in the materials and textures of Mr. Link's plaid suit designed by LAIKA costume designer Deborah Cook.
Cook comments, "Costume isn't a separate entity from character design, it's very much intrinsic. If Mr. Link was wearing completely different clothes, you'd read him in a very, very different way." Hatfield added, "The Air Max 1 has always been a really uplifting, happy design. When I saw the film, I immediately felt Mr. Link was instantly lovable - he's happy-go-lucky, the type to stop and smell the flowers. So, he's got a certain chill that for me made sense with the silhouette."
The Missing Link x Nike Air Max Susan was created using LAIKA's Stratasys PolyJet-based 3D printing and Nike's rapid prototyping. This will be the first collaboration between LAIKA and Nike to release to the public. You can expect the sneakers to hit retailers on April 9.
