Nike has just unveiled the 2019 NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo's first signature sneaker, the Zoom Freak 1.
Combining the Greek Freak's physical, personal and cultural being all into the form of a sneaker took the efforts of a large team at Nike. The shoe is designed to play to Giannis' game which involves a lot of rangy movement and cuts so the multi-directional traction pattern echoes that while a rubber clip from the outsole to the midsole offers lateral support. Double-stacked Zoom Air units under the heel provide the explosiveness while also paying homage to the KOBE sneakers of the past that he so dearly loved playing in.
While the Zoom Air units translate into something more personal for Giannis, additional touches like actual branding also take place thanks to the Global Identity Group (GIG). They looked to Ancient Greece and the fret patterns to bring in designs and symbols that highlight Antetokounmpo's journey from Nigeria to Greece and then from Athens to Milwaukee. The "GA" logo references his path again as well as his athletic prowess and family name.
Finally, cultural aspect is tapped into with all the different lines that are coming out associated with Giannis and his love for Nigeria and Greece. "Antetokounmpo has an incredible story. His love for Greece and reverence for his family's journey is all great fuel for designing something unique for him. We can bridge ideas of European luxury and comfort that embody him as a person," says apparel designer Dustin Mangan.
You can grab the first colorway of the Zoom Freak 1 in Black/White/Lucid Green/Black on June 29 for $120 via nike.com.
