The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee have unveiled the designs for the bronze, silver and gold medals that will be awarded to the athletes in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Differing from previous medals, the 100% sustainable medals are made from recycled e-waste, specifically two years worth of discarded electronics collected from citizens all over Japan between April 2017 and March 2019. Engineers recovered 32kg of gold, 3,500kg of silver and 2,200kg of bronze (95% copper, 5% zinc) from 78,985 tons of electronics. To put that into perspective, that's 6.21 million old cell phones.
